Regulus and James are cuddled up in bed; Regulus is on his back with James’ head resting on his chest. His arm is wrapped around James’ back and he’s running his fingers up and down James’ arm while James draws shapes on Regulus’ chest. Usually it’s the opposite—and they both love that—but sometimes Regulus needs to hold James and James wants to be held.

Regulus is looking up at the ceiling and a thought pops into his mind, and he can’t help the thoughtful hum that escapes.

“What?” James asks.

“Nothing.” Regulus shakes his head

James looks up at Regulus with a pout. “What?”

“I think we should put stars on our ceiling.” Regulus says simply.

James turns to rest his chin on Regulus’ chest as he looks at him. “What?” He says again.

“Yeah.” Regulus nods definitively. “I’m going to put glow-in-the-dark stars on our ceiling so you have something to look at.”

James chuckles. “So I have something to look at?”

“Yeah. It’s really boring—”

“This is boring?” James cuts in with another pout.

Regulus rolls his eyes. “This,” He squeezes James. “is not boring. But our ceiling is boring.”

James glances up quickly. “I think most ceilings are boring, babe.”

“Can I not put glow-in-the-dark stars on our ceiling?” Regulus asks with fake indignation.

James pushes up so he can kiss Regulus. “You can do whatever you want, love. I just don’t want you to ever think I’m bored when I have you in my arms.”

Regulus rolls his eyes. “Cheesy.”

“But true.” James kisses him again before laying his head back on Regulus’ chest.

“So, stars? Yes or no?” Regulus asks after a moment.

“Can we put them in the Leo constellation?” James asks.

Regulus knows James too well, so without hesitation he says, “Only if you don’t give me cheesy lines about Leo on the ceiling and Leo in your arms.”

James huffs petulantly and Regulus just chuckles and squeezes James even tighter.

truly one of the biggest letdowns in piper's writing in hoo specifically is how it doesn't dig deeper into charmspeak and what a disturbing thing it is to have the power to control someone's mind. like I swear this is interesting stuff and more people would get into piper as a character if this were explored a bit more in the text. you definitely see piper disturbed by her own power and hesitant to use it (and note that like many other characters, i.e. leo and hazel, her powers have always been a source of trouble in her life - like how she got in trouble for stealing a car even though all she did was ask for it), but in my opinion the books spend way too much time in piper's perspectives on other stuff when charmspeak is such an unusual and fascinating and terrifying power that offers so many interesting avenues of character exploration

and I really wish the books would have talked more about the canonical fact that charmspeak is more effective against people who are (or could be) physically/sexually attracted to the user. this is a power that children of aphrodite have - a power that is implicitly tied to sexuality as a defense or offense. like this inherently necessitates that piper weaponizes her sexuality against monsters and deities and giants and any other antagonist that want to harm her. which is crazy. especially because she's a teenager and especially because piper is initially characterized as an underconfident girl who goes out of her way to downplay her appearance (do you guys remember how much harassment piper goes through in the books and what little gravity is afforded to those moments... like she has dangerous characters aggressively flirting with or expressing attraction to her A Lot, and she has to play into that attraction to save herself or her friends no matter how uncomfortable it makes her)

I think there's such a dark undertone to all of this that's worth investigating. we know that piper doesn't like herself, doesn't like her powers, and doesn't like demigod life. hoo has her on a journey to become more confident in herself as a person and as a daughter of aphrodite but it's always going to be fucked up that part of her role in the prophecy seven is becoming confident enough in herself that she gets better at weaponizing her ability to violate the free will of others - and her ability to use her sexuality as an armament of war

Crosshair: Really. Believe me, you don't.

Wrecker: Please just surrender or let one of us punch you before you meet somebody you don't want to.

Tech: Someone who usually leaves a trail of blood we do not have the time to clean up right now. Also, I am out of rabies shots.

Bad Guy: You...You'd have to give me a rabies shot?

Tech: Of course not. You'll be dead -- the rabies shot is for Hunter.

Wrecker: We thought he got it one time from biting a Weequay.

Bad Guy: What?!

Crosshair: Turns out, he was just foaming at the mouth because the Weequay tasted so bad.

Bad Guy:

Crosshair: So can you please just fall down or something? We can only hold him back for so long.

In the four episodes we got of the Batcher in TCW, we see Hunter growl and grunt at people (primarily Rex for some reason) as a kind of attempt at communication, he SNIFFS DIRT to track things, and he honestly kind of goes crazy with his knives in the fight scenes. I think this confirms or at least indicates that in his young gun, wild thing, commando TCW era Hunter was feral, or at least semi-feral.

What I'm saying is that I love feral Hunter. And if I must write the feral Hunter content I want, so be it -- but you cannot convince me this man did not go absolutely batcrap insane on a few bad guys early on in his deployment. I'm sure Cody had to preface a few conversations with "Hey, I know I recommended these guys but...just keep an eye on the shaggy one, y'know? No sudden movements or blinking red lights or...you know what, treat him like a pissed off Cane Corso while you're in combat. If you're on downtime, treat him like a not pissed Cane Corso, and make sure his handlers give permission before you try to be friends."

Rex doesn't get this memo because Cody thought it would be funny to let him figure it out on his own, which takes about five days and a few near-death experiences.

When Echo joins the Batch he figured it out in about two hours because someone said something mean about his prosthetics. The next thing he knew, Tech and Wrecker were appealing to Hunter's better nature and Crosshair was reminding the sergeant not to use his teeth as a murder weapon this time because "That's what knives are for."
